The London Times Weekend Section of August 1, 1998 featured a story
about Chris Singer, a 26-year-old squatter, who has helped fix-up and save
a former Orthodox synagogue in Montegue Road, Dalston, East London.
The 1933 building was vacated by its congregation in 1980, and subsequently
served as a community center before being abandoned. The Times story
points out that while squatters frequently vandalize empty buildings, in
this case, a squatter has helped to protect and preserve the structure,
and brought benefits to the neighborhood.
