Philadelphia Cemetery Vandalized
Swastikas were found scrawled at a historic Jewish cemetery and at an
Orthodox synagogue in Philadelphia earlier this year. The cemetery,
founded in 1738, contains graves of American Jews such as Nathan Levy,
a colonial merchant and founder of Philadelphia’s Jewish community, whose
ship carried the Liberty Bell to Philadelphia, and Rebecca Gratz, believed
to be Sir Walter Scott’s model for Rebecca in Ivanhoe.
