Jewish Identity in Contemporary Architecture

This international exploration of Jewish and Holocaust museums, modern synagogues, Jewish community centers and schools demonstrates how these important structures lend architectural shape to the Jewish identity. Architects commissioned to build religious-based structures are uniquely responsible to the history and values of the community they represent. Nowhere is this more evident than within the Jewish structures of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, a time of disruption, destruction, immigration, and reconstruction of Jewish society.

Resplendent Synagogue: Architecture and Worship in an Eighteenth-Century Polish Community by Thomas C. Hubka

In this long-awaited study of the remarkable, but now destroyed wooden synagogue of Gwozdiec (Ukraine), Thomas Hubka unites the too-often disparate fields of architecture, art history and Jewish textual studies. Hubka carefully links the artistic creation of 18th Jews with the mystical tradition embodied in the Zohar, artfully documenting the close relation between art and belief. He evokes a lost culture and community and in so doing pays homage to the work of those prescient scholars of the 1920s and 30s who documented this and other synagogues before the Holocaust, when the buildings were destroyed, and the researchers lost their lives.
