| Significance | Starting out as Beth Shalome and later merging with Beth Ahabah this is the sixth oldest |
| congregation in the United States founded in 1789 and the oldest congregation in Virginia. The |
| congregation started out Orthodox then followed the Sephardic ritual but in 1898 the |
| congregation merged with the 1841 Ashkenazic congregation finally shifted to Reform. |
