DescriptionNeo Classical in design its outstanding features are its stained glass windows, one panel created

by Tiffany. Four column portico entrance above a broad span of steps. A signed Tiffany

window that looks like the image of a volcano to represent Mount Sinai erupting at the very

moment Moses received the Ten commandments is part of the Sanctuary.

SignificanceStarting out as Beth Shalome and later merging with Beth Ahabah this is the sixth oldest

congregation in the United States founded in 1789 and the oldest congregation in Virginia. The

congregation started out Orthodox then followed the Sephardic ritual but in 1898 the

congregation merged with the 1841 Ashkenazic congregation finally shifted to Reform.
