DescriptionThe small quaint burial ground is marked by handsome tombstones, interspersed with marble

sacrophagi with simple, flat slab tops. The oldest tombstone dates from 1683.

SignificanceThis graveyard is a tiny remnant of the Congregation Shearith Israel the oldest Jewish

congregation in the United States which dates from 1684 when a group of Spanish & Portuguese

Jews who had fled the inquisition had a New Years service in New Amsterdam.
