DescriptionOverlooking Central Park it was designed in the monumental neoclassical style. The Masonry

facade is composed of four large columns that enclose three round arched openings, elaborate

bronze gates and three round arched windows. The openings which resemble a loggia lead to a

porch containing the two main entrances.

SignificanceThis is the oldest congregation in America dating from 1684 when a group of Spanish and

Portuguese Jews held a Rosh Hashanah service in New Amsterdam. Parts of its 1729

synagogue are preserved in this the present and fifth one built by the congregation.
