DescriptionOn March 22, 1851, the San Francisco Herald notices the appointment of a committee to

receive subscriptions for a house of worship. On November 14, 1853, the congregation voted

to spend $20,000 on a synagogue to be built on congregation land. A notice of the laying of the

cornerstone of the Broadway Synagogue, in the Herald, on July 24, 1854. Design by George

& Clark first selected but then found too costly, and one by Craw & England substituted.

Consecration took place on September 14, 1854. Total expenses totaled nearly $25,000.
