DescriptionDesigned to be a Victorian mansion although it was built on permafrost, this home is an arctic

anomaly. What also made it unique for this location was the large amount of glass windows.

Bibliography

SignificanceBuilt by a Jewish miner who made three rich gold strikes in this area, this is the best surviving

example of a Nome gold rush mansion. It was probably the first residence on the Bering Sea

Coast. There are two formal? synagogues in Alaska neither of which have any landmark

recognition.
